Evaluation and assessment

Evaluation and assessment

Students are assessed using standards of continuous and formative assessment in line with a typical American secondary school. Grading is the process of applying standardized measurements of varying levels of achievement in a course. Unlike in other systems, Advanced Placement courses do place the full weight of the grade on a summative examination at the end of the course. Instead grades in courses are comprised from several forms of assessment including: unit tests; quizzes; homework; class work; classroom participation; and projects/labs. The weighting of each component is outlined in the course syllabus that is distributed to students during the first week of courses.

The breakdown of grades for AP and Pre-AP courses is:

A: 90-100B: 80-89C: 70-79D: 60-69F: 0-59

For the Provincial Curriculum Courses, the breakdown of grades is:

A: 85-100B: 70-94C: 55-69D: 40-54F: 0-39

Courses that convene three or more times per week offer students one credit per annum. Courses that convene fewer than three times per week offer students ½ credit per annum ( ¼ credit per semester for Provincial Curriculum Courses). One of the main things American universities look at is Grade Point Average (GPA). The GPA is calculated by taking the number of grade points a student earns during their three-year academic career in the AP Center divided by the total number of credits taken. The GPA can be used by potential educational institutions to compare applicants. A Cumulative Grade Point Average is a calculation of the average of all of a student's grades for all courses completed so far.  In order to encourage enrollment in challenging courses, students have a weighted GPA. The following tables show the weighting of courses:

Unless stated otherwise in the course syllabus, each trimester of an AP course is weighted equally.

Examinations

There are two types of examinations in the AP Curriculum: AP Examination from the College Board and Trimester examinations. Trimester examinations are administered at the conclusion of each trimester (end of October; early January; and mid-April). Typically these examinations count for between 25%-45% of the grade for a course (in accordance with what is outlined in the syllabus distributed at the beginning of the academic year.)  AP Examinations offered by the College Board are in May of each year. These courses are scored on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the highest mark.  Students who enroll in a course are required to take the AP examination at the end of the year.

American universities look at the examination grades as well as the grade from the teacher used to calculate GPA. Typically, a grade of 3 is considered a pass while grades of 4 or 5 are considered excellent and will normally earn students university credit. In some cases in some courses, a grade of 2 is indicative of excellent progress. The AP Examination is not a factor in calculating GPA.

A: 90-100B: 80-89C: 70-79D: 60-69F: 0-59

A: 85-100B: 70-94C: 55-69D: 40-54F: 0-39
