NingboForeign Language School
Advanced Placement Center

From the Desk of Richard L. Wilkin, III
Principal-APCenter

Dear ProspectiveStudents,
Ningbo Foreign Language School has an Advanced Placement (AP) Center and though we are relatively new, we are already doing big things!  You may not know a lot about the Advanced Placement Program.  Before I tell you about the things that we are doing, let me tell you a bit about AP.  Advanced Placement courses are college-level courses that are offered to high school students in the United States and in international schools.  AP courses, because they are taught at the university level, include an exam, usually in May, that if passed, will give you university credit.  Thus, it’s like taking university courses in the United States while still enrolled as a student here at Ningbo Foreign Language School!  In addition, many other universities all over the world, including the United Kingdom, accept AP courses for admission.
So what makes the AP Center at Ningbo Foreign Language School so unique?  First, we have set up a Center with a comprehensive curriculum that includes many different areas of study.  Top American universities are interested in good grades and test scores, but they also want to know that you have studied a wide array of subjects.  Our Center offers this diversity.  In addition to AP Physics, Calculus, and Economics, many of our students study AP Art, Art History, World History, Psychology, and many other subjects.  This gives you, as a student, an advantage when applying to American colleges and universities.  In addition to your AP courses, you will still take Chinese courses.  American universities are also quite keen on seeing how you perform in your first language.
What else makes the AP Center here special?  You receive a lot of individualized attention from teachers who care.  You will also have the opportunity to join in several extra-curricular activities.  Right now, we have a golf club, bicycling club, chess club, dance club, Model United Nations, and a student council.  Next year, we plan to expand these options.  Studying in the AP Center also gives you access to information and support in filling out applications for overseas summer programs and your university application!  This is an excellent way to expand your horizons, get some more experience, and figure out what things you are interested in before you actually apply to a university.  Overall, the AP Center offers you lots of options and a way give yourself an advantage over students at other schools who are also trying to apply to many of the same universities.
If you have any questions, please send me an e-mail (either in Chinese or in English). I look forward to hearing from you and talking with you about the many opportunities available in the AP Center here at Ningbo Foreign Language School.
Sincerely,

Richard Lee Wilkin, III
